2021: EU Invests billions in blockchain and high-performance computing

In mid-September 2021, the authorities of the European Union announced investments in blockchain, data infrastructure and high-performance computing as part of a multibillion-dollar project to stimulate the development of technologies throughout the bloc.

The projects, which will be organized in several EU countries, complement a regional push for semiconductor manufacturing after a global shortage forced automakers to slow down production lines. The European Commission did not provide details on how much money will be invested in each technological area.

About a fifth of the EU’s €750 billion ($887 billion) pandemic recovery fund will be spent on digital technologies, as these technologies are crucial for the region.

Officials want to direct funding to several areas by 2030:

Data infrastructure;
Processors with low power consumption;
